Course Description: This is a high-intermediate level general English class (Part II of II) that seeks to build on the foundation of English knowledge students gained in high school and in the fall semester (Part I). Students will practice and develop all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. There will be limited direct grammar instruction; however, grammatical accuracy is essential for success in the course. Attention will be given in class to understanding 嚙踝蕭real world嚙踝蕭 English, developing strategies and skills for academia (such as note-taking and writing essays), and gaining overall confidence, competence and fluency in English in a variety of contexts, both formal and informal.
Required Materials:
1) At a Glance: Essays, 4th Edition, by Brandon (Houghton Mifflin 2006)嚙碼Pick it up at Bookman Books across the street from NTU on Hsin Sheng South Road
2) Choose your own magazine and newspaper articles for the News Talk Project
Recommended References:
1) Longman Advanced American Dictionary (Pearson Longman) or another English-to-English dictionary for learners of English as a second/foreign language
Academic Integrity and Plagiarism: Language skills are developed within a language community, and for success students will need to learn to work well with others and negotiate meaning from the larger English language environment. However, there will be no tolerance for overt cheating, copying, or plagiarizing in student work; such action prevents students from developing their own skills and knowledge and constitutes a violation of university standards of academic integrity. Students who desire to cite (quote, summarize, or paraphrase) outside sources, including Internet materials, books, magazines, or other spoken or written ideas of another person or group, are required to use the Modern Language Association (MLA) format to document any cited materials.
Course Attendance Policy: Students must actively participate in class to succeed. Essays, projects and tests must always be done on time except in the case of an excused absence. News Talk homework includes attendance and participation but is a bit more flexible; it should be completed as assigned. An excused absence occurs when 1) a student has a legitimate, documented personal circumstance that prevents him/her from attending class and 2) he/she communicates with the instructor about it as soon as possible; in such cases, with the instructor嚙踝蕭s permission, students will be allowed to make up missed work. When an excused absence is known in advance, a student should discuss it with the instructor and make a reasonable effort to complete all work in a timely manner.
